The question we are asked most is some version of “when should we come?” And the honest answer, after years of living here, is that there genuinely is no wrong month for Ubud. Each part of the year has its own character, its own colour, and its own reason to book the flight. The right month depends far more on what you want than on any idea of a good or bad season.
So instead of steering you toward or away from any time of year, here is what the Bali year actually feels like, month by month. Spin the wheel below to explore any month, then read on for the fuller picture.
The two seasons, honestly
Bali has two seasons rather than four: a drier stretch and a greener, wetter one. In Ubud, sitting inland and a little higher than the coast, the difference is gentler than people expect.
The drier months, roughly April to October, bring long clear days, bright skies, cooler evenings up in Ubud, and reliable outdoor plans. This is the classic postcard Bali, and it is also the busier, more sociable time.
The greener months, roughly November to March, bring warm mornings, tall dramatic afternoon skies, and short heavy showers that feed the terraces and then clear. The land is at its most electric green, the crowds thin out, and an open-air villa becomes a wonderful place to watch a warm storm roll across the paddy. It is quieter, often better value, and quietly one of our favourite times.
Neither is better. They are simply different holidays, and both are lovely.
Quarter by quarter
January to March: the green months. The terraces are at their most vivid, the jungle hums, and Ubud feels unhurried after the New Year. This stretch also holds Nyepi, the extraordinary Day of Silence, when the whole island rests for twenty-four hours. A quiet villa is the perfect place to experience it. If you want Bali at its lushest and most private, this is your window.
April to June: the golden shoulder. For many people this is the sweet spot. The weather turns reliably dry, harvest colour comes to the fields, festival season builds, and the peak-season crowds have not yet arrived. Warm days, comfortable evenings, and space to move at your own pace. Those who know Bali well often quietly pick May.
July to August: the bright peak. The driest, sunniest, most sociable months, with luminous days, kites high over the fields, and dance and ceremony in full swing. It is busier and livelier, and a private villa gives you the best of that energy with a calm retreat to come home to each evening. If you are travelling with family in the school holidays, this is when Bali is at its most festive.
September to December: the quiet turn. September is a gem: peak-season weather with the crowds thinning and the light turning gold. Through October and November the first refreshing showers green everything up and the skies grow dramatic. December brings warm green-season beauty together with holiday cheer, a wonderful time to gather the family, light the pavilion, and settle in for a Bali Christmas.
What actually changes for your trip
A few practical notes, whatever month you choose:
- The rice cycle is always turning. Because different fields are planted and harvested at different times, you will find vivid green paddy somewhere near the villa in any month. The terraces are never bare for long.
- Mornings are golden year-round. The best hour in Ubud, 5:30 to 7:00, is beautiful in every season: soft light, cool air, quiet lanes. Catch one early morning whenever you come.
- The villa suits every season. Cool air-conditioned bedrooms for warm months, a covered pavilion for the green-season showers, and the pool for all of it.
- Ceremonies do not follow our calendar. The big Balinese festivals move on a 210-day cycle, so something is nearly always happening. Our host will tell you what falls during your stay.
So, when should you come?
Choose the month that matches the holiday you want. Come in the dry months for bright, busy, blue-sky Bali. Come in the green months for lush, quiet, romantic Bali. Come in the shoulders for the best of both with room to breathe. Come for a festival if the dates line up, or come simply when you can get away, because Ubud will be beautiful whenever you arrive.
