What the name means
Pagerwesi translates roughly as iron fence. The observance is about fortifying yourself spiritually against forces that would pull you off course, and the fence is a metaphor for the discipline that protects the mind. It follows Saraswati closely, and the sequence is usually explained as receiving knowledge first, then building the strength to keep it.
How it is observed
Practice varies more than for the larger festivals. In parts of Bali, particularly the north, Pagerwesi is a major occasion comparable to Galungan, with substantial offerings and family gatherings. Around Ubud it is generally quieter and more inward, marked with prayer at the family temple rather than public celebration.
What you will see
Temples busy in the morning, ceremonial dress, and offerings at family shrines. Unless you are near a village that keeps it in the larger style, it will pass without disrupting anything, and it is worth knowing what it is if you notice the extra activity.
